In 1986, The Collegiate Science Technology Entry
Program (CSTEP) was introduced through a New York State grant
funded initiative. CSTEP is an academic enrichment program
whose goal is to promote students’ academic success
in preparing for professional licensure or careers in scientific,
technical or health related fields. CSTEP provides services
and activities to increase the number of historically underrepresented,
economically disadvantaged college students’ entry into
CSTEP targeted professions.
One of the goals of the Collegiate Science and Technology
Entry Program (CSTEP) is to provide a comprehensive learning
community that offers many opportunities for our students
to grow academically and professionally. With regards to
academic development, our program utilizes a solution-focused
approach to mentorship and through this process an individual
action plan is developed for each student. The action plans
are an intentional tool/approach to helping students attain
their goals while promoting structure and time management.
In addition to their action plans, students are expected
to have three to four individual appointments to monitor
their goals and track their progress. Second, they are expected
to attend weekly workshops focused on reading, note-taking,
time management, test taking strategies, etc. Third, they
are expected to meet with a tutor and study regularly either
in one of our study rooms and/or the library.
With regard to professional development, many of our students
are required to have major related internships, research
experience and/or professional development opportunity.
We strongly encourage our students to take part in development
opportunities that encompasses mentorship and support towards
the development and application of skills and strategies
that are essential for preparing students for the workforce.
We work with our faculty and staff on the Morrisville State
College campus in exposing our students to marketable skills
that today’s job market is looking for in graduating
students.
Morrisville CSTEP History
During the fall 2006 semester, the Collegiate Science Technology
Entry Program (CSTEP) was introduced to the Morrisville
State College campus. Since its introduction, Morrisville
State College’s unique environment has demonstrated
its ability to enable CSTEP targeted students to achieve
academic excellence within technical, applied liberal arts,
agriculture and business fields. Morrisville State College
was an ideal candidate for a CSTEP program with its innovative
pedagogical approach especially for students in the technologies
or licensed professions. The college’s wide range
of degree programs includes: accounting, architecture, animal
science, automotive technology, design and drafting technology,
engineering science, health related careers, information
technology, landscape architecture, mechanical engineering
technology, medical laboratory technology, nursing, nutrition
and dietetics, sports, nutrition and fitness management
and wood products technology.
Morrisville State College provide CSTEP students with a
focus on technology combined with a diverse educational
environment similar to the one they will encounter in the
globally competitive field of technology or the licensed
professions. CSTEP students are able to utilize “the
Morrisville experience”, a unique experiential pedagogy,
as they prepare for a successful future in CSTEP targeted
fields and the licensed professions.
